Do your kitchen cabinets look like a tornado just came through? If so it may be time to consider pulling up your sleeves and getting down to organizing them. Nicely organized kitchen cabinets won't just make working in the kitchen easier and faster, but they will make you feel great as well...no more dirty messes lurking behind those closed cabinet doors. Here are some tips on how to go about organizing your kitchen cabinets to make the most of your space and get the tidy, clean kitchen you have been wanting.

Just like with any other organization project, the first step to organizing your kitchen cabinets is to clear out the junk that you don't use anymore. Start by getting three large bins to help you sort through things. One bin will be for items you are going to keep, another for items you are going to donate to charity and the third for items that you are going to throw away.

No matter how ambitious you are feeling it is best to work through your kitchen one cabinet at a time instead of emptying out all of the cabinets at once. This serves two purposes. First, it keeps the project from seeming overwhelming since you are going to be tackling it in small chunks. Second, it helps keep you from getting stalled partway through and having half your items from your cabinets sitting out on your kitchen table for the next few months until you get back around to it.

Empty one cabinet and sort the items into the appropriate bins, then move on to the next cabinet. Once you have sorted everything into keep, give away and throw away piles you can further organize the items you are going to keep. Sort the items you use most frequently into one pile and items you use less frequently into another pile.

Take a look at all the items that are going back into your cabinets and decide if there are any cabinet organizers that you could buy that would make your storage more functional. For instance, if you stack all your plates and bowls on top of one another you may want to look for a shelf organizer that will allow you to separate your bowls from your plates so they are easier to access. Also consider drawer organizers, a lazy susan for easy access to items in the back of a cabinet, spice racks and any other organizers that will make the job of finding what you need in the kitchen easier.

Finally, put everything back into your cabinets. Focus on putting the items you use frequently in places that are easy to reach while putting the items you hardly ever use in higher or harder to reach locations. That will make working in the kitchen and getting to the items you need a lot easier.

Consider storing items you hardly ever use in storage bins to keep them from accumulating dust between uses.
