If you do a lot of knitting you need a lot of different knitting needles. Different patterns call for different sized needles, and before you know it your house can be overrun with knitting needles. If you stick them in a jar or box you have to dig around to try to find a matching pair. One easy way around this is to store them in a roll-up knitting needle case.

There are actually several different benefits to storing your needles in a roll-up fabric case. First, they take up less space than if you just had them all laying around in a box or bin. The case keeps them neat and tidy and makes for a compact storage solution.

Second, you can keep pairs of needles together in their own little pouch in the case so you never have to waste time hunting for a pair again.

Finally, having all your needles in a compact case makes it easy to take your knitting needles with you when you travel. All you have to do is toss the case in your suitcase and you are ready to go - no messy piles of needles floating around in your luggage.

You can buy roll-up knitting needle cases at your local craft or hobby store. Typically they range in price from about $10-$30 depending upon the fabric they are made from as well as how many pouches they have for storing needles. Many cases store only long needles, while other cases have smaller pouches as well where you can store shorter needles and crochet hooks.

If you don't want to spend that much money on a case, you can always make your own for a fraction of the cost. It is a relatively easy sewing project that you can whip up in no time. All you need is some thread, a sewing machine, some fabric that you like and some ribbon to tie it closed.

Basically, you just cut two pieces of fabric into rectangles that are taller than your needles and as wide as you want your case to be. Cut the fabric wider if you have a lot of pairs of knitting needles to store and narrower if you don't have many needles. Be sure to leave a seam allowance on the rectangles as well. Press the seam allowance to the inside on each of the pieces and lay them together with wrong sides facing.

Cut a third piece of fabric that will become the pouch on your roll up case. It should be shorter than the other two pieces, but the exact same width. Again, leave a seam allowance on the fabric. Press the seam allowance under and then lay the fabric on top of the other two pieces, right side facing out. You may want to zig-zag stitch around the edges of this piece of fabric before laying it down to keep them from fraying since they will not be enclosed inside a seam.

Finally, cut two lengths of ribbon that are long enough to wrap around the rolled up case and tie together. Place them on each side between the "pouch" fabric and the backing fabric.

Pin everything together and stich around the entire outside edge. You will be joining together the two back pieces of fabric, the pouch fabric and the ribbon with this single seam you are stitching.

Once all the pieces are joined, you need to create the individual pockets for the needles. To do this, mark off sections on the pouch about 1.5-2" apart. Stitch a line from the bottom of the pouch to the top of the whole piece at each of the points that you marked.

Finally, put your needles inside, roll it up and tie the ribbon. There you go! Your own custom roll-up knitting needle case.
