Shopping for clothes is fun when you are looking for shirts, shoes and dresses. But if you are like most women when it comes time to shop for pants or jeans you inwardly cringe and hit the stores with a feeling of dread. Finding pants that fit is not an easy task for most women. Clothing designers are no help, either since they often label their pants sizes with smaller numbers to try to play off women's egos and design their pants for a "typical" woman's body. Unfortunately, what they view as a typical woman's body is a far cry from the bodies that most of us have. The good news is that it is possible to find pants that fit and feel great no matter what your size or body type. Here are some tips for finding pants that fit and flatter.

If you are going to splurge on any item in your wardrobe you should consider spending the extra money on pants. Although it is possible to find less expensive pants that fit, often times more expensive pants are fit better on the majority of women's bodies. Not only that, but they typically have better quality construction which means that when you do find a pair that fits you will be able to keep them around a lot longer.

Before you begin shopping for pants you need to psych yourself up that you are not going to let the size listed on the label get in the way of you finding a pair that fits. Remember that your goal is to find pants that fit and if that means that you need to buy a larger size than you wore in college then so be it, right?

So let's start by getting down to the nitty-gritty about why most of us have trouble finding pants that fit. Unless you were born with a perfectly proportional body chances are that you have one part of your body that is larger than the other parts. For a lot of women this means that their hips butt or thighs are larger than their waist. If this sounds familiar you probably find that if you buy pants that fit in the lower body the waist is too big and gaps or doesn't fit right. The opposite can also be true where your waist may be larger than your lower body so if you buy pants that fit in the waist they are too big through the hips, butt or thighs.

To get around this problem you are going to need to do two things. The first is to determine the largest part of your body and then buy pants to fit that area. The second is to find a tailor or a person who does alterations in your area. Having a pair of pants altered usually costs between $5-10 which is a very sound investment to get a pair or pants that fits you like a glove. It is a lot easier to take pants in than to let them out which is why you want to buy them to fit the largest part of your body. Then, the tailor can quickly and easily take them in to fit the smaller parts of your body perfectly.

While it may seem like a waste of money to have all of your pants tailored to fit I can assure you that it is money well spent. A great fitting pair of pants can make all the difference with your confidence level and your appearance. Not only that, but if you avoid trendy styles and go with classically styled pants a nice pair of pants that is properly cared for can last you for years.

On a final note, if you are lucky enough to find a pair of pants that fits right off the rack consider buying more than one pair or several pairs in different colors.

By fitting your pants to the largest part of your body and then having them taken in to fit everywhere else you will get a perfectly fitted pair of pants that flatters your body and makes you look and feel great. Spending a little bit of extra money on tailoring can more than pay for itself with the extra use and comfort that you will get from your pants in the long run.
